Niki's Top 5 Spooky Games/Movies to Try This Halloween
Halloween is almost upon us and with that you might want to prepare yourselves to get in the spooky spirit just in time for Halloween and also Friday the 13th. If you plan on getting a few friends together this spooky month, here are a few suggested scary movies/games for you to have a bit of a laugh while scaring each other a little bit.
1. Play Friday the 13th the game online with friends (or watch the films)
This game is a very great way to scare your friends and have a laugh, as four players play what is essentially, a deadly online game of hide and seek with up to 4 players and one of which playing as Jason with the aim of hunting your fellow players. The great part about this game is you don't even have to be together to play, you can just play online. The game does come with in-game voice chat but it allows whoever is Jason to hear the chat, which isn't too good if you want to stay hidden. Instead I recommend you use the app Discord to chat with your friends - it lets you create chat channels that you can leave and join at any time for just your friends so whoever is Jason, can simply leave the chat for that round so no one's hiding plan is given away. While you're at it, why not give the films a try! I recommend the original as it was a film that defined the slasher genre, but there is a more updated version if you prefer updated special effects.
2. Play Until Dawn with a your friends
Until Dawn is probably one of the most fun games to play with friends despite being a single player game because you can consult your friends for the decisions while playing and take turns passing the controller amongst your friends to share the fun and the scares. The tongue and cheek nature of the game makes it spooky but not too spooky that it is unplayable. The story and characters pay homage to those cheesy horror/slasher films in the 90's and 00's where audiences would rage at the characters for making stupid decisions, now it give those audiences control to show them that making life and death decisions while under pressure isn't as easy when you don't have hindsight on your side. The majority of the gameplay is making decisions or button prompts, meaning you don't have to have an insane aim like you need for shooter games to enjoy this game.
3. Halloween (movie)
Keeping to the theme of Halloween, is the film of the same name that is a classic of the slasher genre. As the original is quite an old film, it might seem less scary to some people, which is why it is a great pick for a Halloween themed movie night with your friends. Being less scary to some means some still find it enjoyable as it becomes funny and a great laugh for everyone. If you really want to see an updated version, there was a remake made in 2002 and 2 subsequent sequels that try to follow the same basic premise as the original films.
3. Find some online ghost stories
One of the best and most effective ways to scare your friends, long before the internet, has been to creep each other out with ghost stories. Now with the internet, people have access to many more ghost stories they may not have been able to hear before and some even have accompanying animations as you read to make it even more scary. One particularly scary online story is the Bongcheon Dong ghost story, a very creepy story based on eyewitness accounts and has accompanying illustrations to give you spooky visuals. Reading this with friends can actually be quite fun and I recommend it if you want to scare your friends.
If you want to read it yourself, you can find it here!
Another example of a creepy online story is the free app called Sara is Missing, a game that simulates the worst case scenario of finding a stranger's phone. When you start the game it looks very similar to a real smartphone interface and pretends to send you texts where you must pick from a set of options what to reply, it very quickly takes a sharp turn to Creepytown and is very fun to show to your friends.
4. Play Resident Evil 7 with friends
Though this game is also meant to be a single player game, it can be great fun to sit on a couch together and pass the controller along each time one of you dies in the game. Having friends to advise you on what to do as well as heighten the fear you feel make the experience even more fun. To add to that, those with a PlayStation VR headset can make the experience even more scary when you can't look away from the screen and will make your friends dread their turn. If first person games aren't what you like, then you can also play The Evil Within, with friends in the same "pass and play" style. It was created by Shinji Mikami, the same man who created the very first Resident Evil game, back in 1996. He even has stated that The Evil Within's gameplay is essentially what he wanted to do with the original Resident Evil, but couldn't due to technological limits of the time.
5. Play Outlast with friends
Like the other single player games on this list, you can pass the controller among friends and have turns being scared. This game has amazing suspense that is built up through the creepy scenery and atmosphere combined with the suspenseful music and sound design as well as the low lighting. This is an amazing game to play in the dark with friends and is probably one of the most scary games on this list with a downloadable add-on called Whistleblower, which is just as scary, if not more scary than the main game. The sequel to Outlast was also released this year, which you might want to try if you enjoyed the first game and want more from the series.
